The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Atlantic is a documentary film by the filmmaker Thorsten O. Böhnke from 2012. It tells of a journey that takes him across the Atlantic Ocean in different sailing boats . On the stops on this voyage along the old discovery routes, Böhnke visits people who are committed to nature and animal protection. It is the first part of the documentary series Hoch am Wind .

Background and content

It was more or less by chance that the filmmaker and shipbuilding engineer Böhnke was given the opportunity to sail as a crew member on a friend's catamaran . The "Indiana" started her voyage on May 2, 2010 in Kiel. The course was supposed to lead “beyond the horizon” along the routes of the former tall ships . In contrast to the ventures of the then adventurers Charles Darwin and Alexander von Humboldt , who discovered and described new animal and plant species, today many species are threatened with extinction. For example, the friends visited the Teide National Park on Tenerife on their sailing trip to the Canary Islands . Böhnke met scientists and environmentalists who are committed to preserving the landscape and protecting the sometimes unique fauna. From the Canary Islands , his route “hitchhiked” over the Cape Verde Islands to the Caribbean . Without having his own boat, Böhnke got to know many committed people who have made it their business to protect the animal world. He swam with pilot whales , watched sea turtles and lizards. In addition to the beauty of the maritime biotopes , the film also shows their sensitivity to human intervention and changes.
