Octafluoropropane is a chemical compound from the group of aliphatic , saturated halogenated hydrocarbons (PFC) and a representative of the perfluorocarbons .
Extraction and presentation
Octafluoropropane can be produced by electrochemical fluorination or by the Fowler process with cobalt (II) fluoride .
properties
Octafluoropropane is a colorless, non-flammable gas with an ethereal odor. It is heavier than air and is in liquefied form in pressurized gas cylinders . It is also available as a mixture with chlorodifluoromethane or propane . When the liquid flows out or when large amounts of gas escape, cold mists form and spread across the floor. The compound decomposes above 800 ° C. Their critical temperature is 71.9 ° C, the critical pressure is 26.8 bar, the critical density is 0.628 kg / l and the triple point temperature is −148.3 ° C. The global warming potential is 9878 and the ozone depletion potential is 0.
use
Octafluoropropane is used in the electronics industry as a mixture with oxygen for plasma etching of silicon dioxide .
In medicine it is used as a contrast enhancer for ultrasound in cardiology .
As R-218, it is used as a refrigerant in industry.
