butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 16 to 26 millimeters. The sexes do not differ in color. The upper side of the forewings is milky white and crossed by several, mostly indistinct gray-brown transverse lines. The wavy line is very evenly wavy. A clear gray band stands out from the whitish-colored upper side of the hind wing.

Adult caterpillars are short and maggot-shaped. They have a whitish yellow color. The head capsule is glossy dark brown.

Similar species

The yellow light clove capsule tensioner ( Perizoma flavofasciata ) differs by the strong yellowish markings on the upper side of the forewing.

The distribution area of the Klappertopf capsule wrench extends through large parts of western and central Europe including the British Isles and further east to the Urals . The species also reaches the Arctic Circle . In the mountains of Fennos Scandinavia it is represented by the subspecies Perizoma albulata subfasciaria and on the Shetland and Faroe Islands by Perizoma albulata thules . It colonizes both dry and moist lawn communities. In the Alps it rises up to 2000 meters.

Way of life

The rattling pot capsule wrench usually forms one generation a year whose moths fly from mid-April to mid-July. In climatically favorable areas, specimens from a second generation were found in August or September. The moths are crepuscular and nocturnal and visit artificial light sources . The main food of the caterpillars are the fruits of the shaggy rattle pot ( Rhinanthus alectorolophus ) or the small rattle pot ( Rhinanthus minor ). The caterpillars live in the seed pods throughout their development. The species overwinters as a pupa .

Danger

Although the species is widespread in Germany and occurs in large numbers regionally, due to the loss of poor meadows it is in decline in places and is included in the red list for Baden-Württemberg on the warning list.

Trivia

In 1993 the Post of the Faroe Islands displayed a Perizoma albulata butterfly on a 900- Oyrur postage stamp.
