Peroguarda is a place and a municipality of freguesia in the Baixo Alentejo in Portugal . The municipality is located in the district of Ferreira do Alentejo , with an area of 36.4 km² and 364 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). This results in a population density of 10 inh. / Km². Peroguarda is located in the agricultural center of the region, and wheat production in particular is of supraregional importance.
History and meaning
In the municipality, a large number of finds prove the settlement of the area to pre-Roman, Roman , Visigothic and Arab times, whereby the excavations of the Roman tomb at the Casa da Santa Margarida have the greatest archaeological importance among the finds in the municipality .
The first documented mention of Peroguarda, already as an independent municipality, comes from the 15th century.
Peroguarda is considered a particularly characteristic village of the Alentejo. When the “most Portuguese village” was selected by the propaganda of the Estado Novo regime, the village was shortlisted and in 1938 was visited four times by the selection committee. Monsanto finally received the award in 1939 , but Peroguarda has since been considered the “most Portuguese village” in the Alentejo, and a particularly typical example of the region's villages.
The Corsican ethnomusicologist and television director Michel Giacometti (1929–1990), who worked particularly in Portugal , was buried here at his request.
Culture and sights
The irrigation canals of the Alqueva dam run past the town. In addition to the Barragem da Capela dam, built in 1989, and the Cemitério de Peroguarda municipal cemetery , the medieval, single-nave, late Baroque parish church Igreja Paroquial de Peroguarda (also Igreja de Santa Margarida ), which was redesigned in the 18th century, is a listed building.
