The PBZ Pestalozzi Library Zurich is the public library in the city of Zurich with 14 libraries.

history

1896-1900

On the occasion of the 150th birthday of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi , the Pestalozzigesellschaft association was founded in Zurich in 1896; with the purpose of promoting the creation of general public libraries - so-called public libraries - and thus promoting popular education. In the first construction phase, existing reading rooms were taken over by various companies. As early as 1897, regular operations could begin in the company's own new library in the Schanzengraben school building. Although the library was initially only intended for adults, youth publications and literature were kept from the start . Since the library in the city center was very busy, the Pestalozzigesellschaft planned to open one or two branches to relieve the main office. Thus, at the turn of the century, the later development of the PBZ Pestalozzi Library in Zurich from a single library to a network of libraries spread across the city became apparent.

1901-2000

In the first phase of expansion, libraries were opened in the Neumünster (1902), Unterstrass (1904), Aussersihl (1907) and Enge (1925) quarters . In 1932 the Pestalozzihaus on Zähringerstrasse in Zurich's old town was completed and the main reading room and the company administration moved into the building. With the second incorporation of Zurich in 1934, the Pestalozzigesellschaft took over the libraries of the previously independent communities of Albisrieden , Altstetten , Höngg , Oerlikon , Schwamendingen and Witikon . In the war years that followed soon, the reading rooms were used as official warming rooms. In 1952, the Pestalozzigesellschaft received an order from the Education Authority for the overall planning for supplying Greater Zurich with libraries and reading rooms for adults and children. In 1954, the first so-called will open access library of the city opened in Oerlikon and announced the change of PBZ into a modern, multi-media library: 1973 is followed by the conversion of the main site on freehand lending and the introduction of audio cassettes (1975) and board games (1,976) than borrowing media. In 1984 the last reading room in the district was closed and in 1987 CDs and maps were added to the media offer. In the 1990s, video cassettes and CD-ROM were added.

2001-2018

With the renovation of the libraries in the Aussersihl and Schwamendingen quarters in 2004, the phase of architectural renewal of the PBZ began. In 2007, the former headquarters on Zähringerstrasse in Zurich's old town was completely renovated. Since then, the building has housed the Old Town library and the administration of all libraries. The current range of media includes books for adults, children and young people, e-media (e-books, e-audios and e-papers plus databases), audio books, music CDs, children's CDs, language courses, maps, sheet music, DVDs , CDs -ROM, newspapers and magazines. Various libraries of the PBZ also carry foreign language media - in the intercultural library in Hardau, which opened in 2009, in a total of twelve different languages. At the general meeting on July 3, 2012 in Zurich, the sponsoring association was renamed “PBZ Pestalozzi Library Zurich”. The association and the library now have the same name. In the course of the renovation and expansion of the two libraries in Oerlikon and Unterstrass, the children's and youth library on Bucheggplatz was closed in summer 2013, followed by the closure of the PBZ Seebach in February 2015. The PBZ has since comprised 14 libraries.

Since 2019

In September 2016, the Zurich electorate approved the loan for the Schütze-Areal project. During the two-year construction phase, a primary school, a district center, a PBZ library and rooms for the offices of the PBZ administration were built on the former industrial site in District 5. In the summer of 2019 the PBZ library Schütze was opened, in the same step the PBZ library Wipkingen was closed.
