Peter Alfred Ziegler (born November 2, 1928 in Winterthur , † July 19, 2013 in Binningen ) was a Swiss geologist .

Life

Ziegler received his doctorate in geology from the University of Zurich under Rudolf Trümpy in 1955 and then worked as an exploration geologist in the oil industry, first for French and US companies in Israel, Madagascar and Algeria, then for Shell in Canada, and from 1970 for the Shell headquarters in the Netherlands, where he oversaw oil and gas exploration in the North Sea. As a partial result, he published the Geological Atlas of Western and Central Europe (Shell and Elsevier) in 1982, the 2nd edition published in 1990.

In 1988 he retired from Shell and in 1992 became honorary professor at the University of Basel , from 1996 as adjunct professor for global geology. He also taught at the Free University of Amsterdam . He was involved in various international research projects, including as initiator and coordinator of the Eucor-Urgent project from 1999 to 2008, which dealt with the evolution and tectonics of the Upper Rhine Rift.

He dealt with intra-plate tectonics and tectonic development of sedimentary basins (with applications in petroleum geology) and with the Phanerozoic development of Europe.

In 2013, as a climate skeptic , he spoke out in favor of the fact that it is not carbon dioxide but the sun that is responsible for global warming. Together with other climate skeptics, he prepared a special issue for Energy and Environment .
