After the academy reform in 1968/69 he moved to the Central Institute for Physics of the Earth (ZIPE) at the Academy of Sciences, where he completed his habilitation in 1980 with his thesis “Form and genesis of ruptures as an expression of the activity of the earth's crust ” and became head of the department for basement rock .

In 1982 Bankwitz was appointed professor of geology at the Central Institute for Earth Physics and in 1986 took over the management of the geology department. In 1988 he became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. In 1990 he was elected a member of the scientific council of the Central Institute for Physics of the Earth and was involved in setting up the GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ) in Potsdam until his retirement in 1996 .
