Life

Becker, whose father was Spanish, first grew up in Berlin-Tiergarten before he came to his grandparents in Baitz during the Second World War . He later lived in Belzig . From 1953 to 1955 he completed a basic training as a forester and then studied at the workers and farmers faculty of the Potsdam University of Education , where he graduated from high school .

In 1956 Becker became a member of the cycling department of SG Dynamo Potsdam after coming into contact with cycling in 1952, when a stage of the peace ride passed around 20 kilometers from his place of residence. Becker began studying at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig , which he graduated in 1962 as a certified sports teacher. The title of his diploma thesis was "The physical preparation of young male cyclists for road races, taking into account the varied athletic training." During his studies, he made the decision to turn to the profession of coach or sports teacher. As a driver, Becker, during the Rund um Riesa race in 1961, said he did a self- experiment with the stimulant drug Cefertan , which was popular among drivers at the time. “I still felt miserable the next day. It was immediately clear to me that something like this could not be healthy and since then, to this day, I have consistently opposed any drug abuse, ”he wrote in his book Der Trainer , published in 2004 . A life dedicated to cycling .

After studying at DHfK, Becker worked as a district sports teacher and from 1964 as a cycling trainer at the Berlin children's and youth sports school "Werner Seelenbinder". At the same time he became a member of the youth commission of the German Cycling Association (DRSV). Becker discovered Jan Ullrich in 1986 during a cross-country bike race in Potsdam . From 1987 on, Becker supervised Ullrich and André Korff at the children's and youth sports school, along with others . After the end of the GDR, Becker moved to RG Hamburg in 1992 and took Ullrich and Korff with him. In 1993 Ullrich became amateur world champion on the street under Becker's direction . In a conversation with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Ullrich said about Becker, who had trained him since he was 13: "Becker is more than a trainer, a good friend and a great advisor."

Becker worked with Ullrich until 2002. On the subject of doping, Becker said in 2006 to Bild : “I always taught him: As long as we're together, this nonsense (doping) is not an issue, otherwise there's something behind the spoons. "

Becker's son Erik was a professional cyclist.
