Peter Brenner

Peter Brenner , actually Peter Felsenstein (born May 8, 1930 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German theater director , opera director and translator .

Live and act

Peter Felsenstein was born as the second son of the director Walter Felsenstein from his first marriage to Ellen Felsenstein (* 1905 in Vienna, née Brenner). He studied both Jus at the University of Vienna (where he also received his doctorate) and music at the State Academy of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (degree with artistic maturity test).

At the Salzburg Festival , Brenner was assistant director to Günther Rennert and from 1965 to 1969 assistant and evening director at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein .

From 1969 to 1973 he was senior director of the opera at the Städtische Bühnen Freiburg , from 1973 to 1984 at the Bremen Theater .

From 1984 to 1991 he was director of the Darmstadt State Theater , and from 1991 to 1999 he held the same position at the Mainz State Theater .

Brenner staged as a guest among others at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich , at the Hamburg State Opera , at the Welsh National Opera , at the Schwetzingen Festival , the Zurich Opera , at the Opera of Cologne to, at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Dusseldorf-Duisburg as well as to Opera houses in Mannheim, Nuremberg, Wiesbaden, Hanover, etc.

From 1988 to 1991 he worked as a director at the Salzburg Festival (opening with Mozart's La clemenza di Tito ) and the Salzburg Easter Festival . He worked with the conductors Riccardo Muti , Colin Davis , Wolfgang Sawallisch , Kurt Masur , Peter Schneider , Horst Stein , Hans Drewanz and Jun Märkl .

Teaching assignments took him to the Folkwang University of Essen (lecturer at the opera school), to the State Music Academy in Freiburg (stage director of the opera school) and to the University and Music Academy in Hamburg (lecturer for the main subjects of the joint course in musical theater directing).

A whole series of precise and singable opera translations, which he worked on for the publishers Ricordi , Schott , Sonzogno , Peters Frankfurt , Universal-Edition Wien and Bärenreiter , also came from Brenner .

Honors

Brenner is an honorary member of the Bremen Theater, holder of the city seal in silver (highest cultural award of the city of Mainz), a member of the Society for the Promotion of the Richard Wagner Complete Edition and a member of the State Music Council of Rhineland-Palatinate .
