Peter Eich (ancient historian)

Peter Eich (born January 6, 1970 in Cologne ) is a German ancient historian .

Peter Eich has been studying history and Latin at the University of Cologne since the winter semester 1989/90 and passed the first state examination in November 1995. From 1997 to 2007 he was a research assistant at the University of Cologne. In 2002, Eich received his doctorate from Werner Eck in Cologne . In 2007 he completed his habilitation in Cologne; in the same year he was appointed junior professor for “Ancient Culture” at the University of Potsdam . Eich has been Professor of Ancient History with a focus on Roman History and Historical Anthropology at the University of Freiburg since the 2010/11 winter semester . In 2016, he turned down an offer at the University of Potsdam for a W3 professorship in ancient history.

Eich, he has been co-editor of the ancient science journal Gnomon since 2017 . He has also been a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2018 . His research focuses on social and administrative history, in particular the Roman Empire and late antiquity. His older brother Armin Eich is also an ancient historian.
