Life

Peter Bendel, son of the painter Emil Sigismundowitsch Bendel , graduated from school and studied philosophy in the city of Friborg (Switzerland) from 1914 to 1925 and took private lessons in painting during this time . After his return to Moscow in 1925, he attended the painting department at the Wchutemas State Art School and, from 1925 to 1928, the studio of Fyodor Ivanovich Rerberg and from 1929 to 1930 the studio of Dmitri Nikolajewitsch Kardowskis . Bendel was a member and since 1940 chairman of a group of Moscow painters.

After the start of the Great Patriotic War , he was summoned to the front as a photographer . In 1942 he fell in Vyazma in German captivity . After the war ended, Bendel was arrested by the People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD) in 1945 . The legend circulated in artistic circles that the reason for his arrest was his making a huge portrait of Josef Stalin for the facade of the Bolshoi Theater , which on a rainy November day was so disfigured that it looked as if Stalin's face was behind bars would have found. A contemporary witness of Bendel - Klaus Hennig - reports, however, that Bendel had to portray German officers in German captivity in order to improve his chances of survival. This was so resented by the Russian regime that he was arrested for it immediately after the information was leaked.

On April 16, 1945, Peter Bendel was sentenced by a military tribunal to ten years' imprisonment and five years of expropriation under Article 58 of the RSFSR Criminal Code on charges of anti-Soviet agitation . He had to spend his imprisonment in the Vorkuta labor camp , where he worked as a chief artist in addition to the forced labor in the theater of the Gulag . Bendel was involved in the design of numerous theater plays and was also employed as a portrait painter and with creative commissions for urban planning.

The Vorkuta camp was dissolved in 1953, which freed him after 8 years in prison, but without rehabilitation. In 1953 he moved to Syktyvkar in the Komi Republic . He worked in the local history museum, the Komi Republic Drama Theater and national exhibitions. Due to the amnesty of September 17, 1955 , he renounced an already planned artist trip and immediately returned to Moscow. This was followed by work for the illustrated Ogonyok and for the theater column of the Izvestia newspaper . He was also in great demand as a graphic artist and created numerous paintings and graphics that were used for postage stamps, envelopes, postcards and posters.

At the end of the seventies, Peter Bendel stayed several times with Klaus Hennig in the Villa Käthe-Kollwitz-Ufer 92 when he visited the art city of Dresden . In doing so, he created some unpublished portraits of the Hennig family.

Using a special technique, Peter Bendel created numerous (large) portraits of the “leaders of all peoples”, which, despite his conviction, continued to be affixed to buildings such as the Bolshoi Theater. Many of the world-famous, striking representations of Marx , Engels , Lenin , etc. a. were created by him. His commissioned work with Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin and Mao can also be found worldwide and is still relevant in the history of world politics with regard to Sino-Russian relations .
