Life

Peter Gabriel grew up in what is now Bergkamen and began studying classical archeology , ancient history and art history in Münster in 1950 . From 1955 he studied pedagogy in Bielefeld . After graduation he became a teacher and in 1963 took over the position of main teacher and headmaster of the evangelical elementary school Drensteinfurt . From 1968 until his retirement in 1991 he was rector of the valley school, a primary school in Hamm .

During his studies in classical archeology he made several trips through Italy and Greece , which also influenced his later career as a writer. His first two books, Persian Storm, about Hellas and Hannibal at the gates of the ancient great powers Greece and Rome .

His third book is strongly autobiographical . Peter Gabriel was drafted into the Reich Labor Service in the spring of 1945 , where he learned, among other things, how to use bazookas . In the last weeks of the war he was ordered to the front, but instead fled with a friend “forward”, towards the front, to the Americans. Peter Gabriel processes this experience in Escape Forward .

His last novel so far The Steppe Riders come deals with the invasion of the Hungarians into the East Franconian Empire in 933.

In addition to his novels, Peter Gabriel wrote numerous articles in the Westfälischer Anzeiger and other newspapers, in the Westphalia yearbook and in local calendars as well as children's stories in the Westfälische Rundschau .

In 2006 he summarized several of his articles in the book Two Talers for the Pastor, Seventeen Schillings for the Teacher , which was self- published.

Today Peter Gabriel lives with his wife in Drensteinfurt, where he continues to write articles for local newspapers.
