Life

Peter Gruel was a member of an old, from Mecklenburg originating patrician family . He himself came from the city of Laage . From August 1505 he was enrolled at the University of Rostock and obtained a bachelor's degree here in the winter semester 1506/07 . In 1514 he was brought to the University of Greifswald by the Pomeranian Duke Bogislaw X. Here he taught as a professor at the artist faculty , of which he was temporarily dean .

During the stormy times at the beginning of the Reformation - from 1527 to 1539 the university even had to stop teaching - he moved to Greifswald's council as councilor in 1520. In 1539 he became mayor of Greifswald.

Peter Gruel moved his relative Georg Gruel to Greifswald, who was also a professor at the artist faculty and temporarily its dean and who also moved to the Greifswald council in 1535.

According to the handwritten notes of the later living professor Jakob Gerschow (1587–1655) from Greifswald , Peter Gruel is said to have been rector of the university. It cannot be said whether he took up this office.

Peter Gruel was first married to Anna Kannegeter, and after her death was second to Katharina Apenborch. His son Christoph Gruel became a lawyer and professor in Greifswald, his son Peter Gruel (II.) Became a councilor in Greifswald.
