Peter A. Henning (born April 29, 1958 in Wiesbaden ) is a German computer scientist and physicist. He has been Professor of Computer Science at the Faculty of Computer Science at the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences since 1998 and guest professor for Information Business Technologies at the private Steinbeis University in Berlin since 2013 .

Life

Henning's family comes from Karnin . Peter Henning, son of the technical employee Hans-Jürgen Henning and his wife Ilse, spent his childhood and youth in Langen, Hesse . Before graduating from high school in 1977, he was accepted into the German National Academic Foundation . During his military service from 1977 to 1978, he designed and built a microcomputer based on the Intel 8080 processor . After that, he first studied physics and computer science at the Technical University of Darmstadt from 1978, but then concentrated on physics. In 1980 he left the German National Academic Foundation and received a grant from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation .

In 1983 Henning passed his diploma examination with distinction. From 1984 he received a doctoral scholarship from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and worked on his dissertation at the Institute for Nuclear Physics at the TU Darmstadt and at the Society for Heavy Ion Research (GSI) . In 1987 he was with the work of Landau's theory of Fermi liquid under the Quantenhadrodynamik with honors doctorate . In 1993 he completed his habilitation with the thesis Thermo Field Dynamics for Quantum Fields with Continuous Mass Spectrum in the field of theoretical physics .

From 1984 to 1996 Henning worked in various positions in theoretical physics, a. a. in the USA , Canada , Russia , China . This includes a one-year stay as a Feodor Lynen Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the State University of New York in Stony Brook and a position as visiting professor at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. During this time, 46 publications were produced, most of which deal with the application of the relativistic quantum field theory to many-body systems.

In 1996 Henning changed his focus of work. Initially, he worked in data processing for Deutsche Börse in Frankfurt am Main until 1998 as a group leader in software development and as a technology consultant. In 1998, he received a call to the Department of computer science of the University of Karlsruhe as a professor of computer science and multimedia. Here, under his direction, one of the first German master’s courses in computer science was created. In 2006 he was founding director of the Institute for Computers in Education, where he mainly deals with the use of new media in teaching and e-learning . One of the main activities of this institute from 2003 to 2014 was the European Award for Technology Supported Learning ( eureleA ), which honors the best projects in this sector across Europe, which has been replaced by the Open Educational Resources Award since 2015.

In February 2010, Henning and Sünne Eichler took over the content management of Learntec , an international congress fair for technology-based learning. It took place for the first time under this leadership in February 2011.

Henning married and has three children.

Contributions to theoretical physics

Peter Henning's contributions to theoretical physics can be assigned to quantum field theory . Since the 1950s a. a. found by Walter Thirring and others that in addition to the fundamental operator algebra that defines a quantum field, there are apparently always two concrete representations of the field: one of them develops forward in time, the other backward. In the quantum field theory, the quantum theory of wave fields, a perspective has developed since the 1950s that abandoned the particle concept in favor of a more general spectral function of the field quanta . From about the mid-1980s onwards, the advent of experiments with high-energy collisions of atomic nuclei made it necessary to combine this quantum field theory with the statistical physics of "hot" systems.

Henning has been dealing with this area since 1989. In his habilitation thesis he showed that the so-called transport equations of non-equilibrium thermodynamics have their origin in a mixing condition of the two field representations.

Other contributions also deal with spectral functions, both from a fundamental mathematical point of view and applied to e.g. B. neutrino physics .

Contributions to computer science

From 2000 onwards, Henning dealt with the visualization of settlement structures, and he was awarded for the project with which semantically rich city models can be created.

More recent articles by Peter Henning on computer science can be assigned to e-learning . Here are learning platforms used to manage digital learning material and reproduce - for example, by the learner through clicks through a course with interactive elements. From 2007 onwards, Henning and others took the view that this would also enable content to be adapted to the current needs of the learner - for example according to level of difficulty, learning status, learning situation and pedagogical model. The specific needs of the learner would have to be laid down in a structured description of knowledge (an ontology ) that would be largely independent of the subject matter itself. In 2008 he put together an international research consortium; a research application to the EU Commission was successful in 2012. From 2012 to 2015, the research project Intuitel was carried out under the direction of Henning, with which this adaptivity of learning platforms was demonstrated. In contrast to previous projects, existing learning platforms in Intuitel, namely ILIAS , Moodle and three commercial systems, have been expanded into adaptive learning systems. The resulting software was released under open source licenses .
