Peter Hoffmann (born August 13, 1930 in Dresden ) is a German-Canadian historian . His main research focus is the resistance against National Socialism , his Stauffenberg biography is a standard work. Hoffmann lives in Canada and Germany.

Life

Hoffmann was born in Dresden as the son of the later director of the Württemberg State Library Wilhelm Hoffmann and grew up in Stuttgart . After studying at the Universities of Stuttgart, Tübingen, Zurich and Northwestern University, he was in 1961 when Franz Schnabel at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich with a thesis Diplomatic relations between Wuerttemberg and Bavaria in the Crimean War and until the start of the Italian crisis to Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1961 to 1965 he was a lecturer at the University of Maryland, College Park . In 1965 he became an assistant professor and in 1968 an associate professor of history at the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls. In 1970 he accepted a professorship for German history at McGill University in Montreal . Hoffmann has been William Kingsford Professor of History since 1988.

He is u. a. Member of the Advisory Board of the Research Association July 20, 1944 .

He has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada since 1989 . In 2000 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class. In 2010 he received the Staufer Medal for his services to Baden-Württemberg.
