Peter Jannetta

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Joseph Jannetta (born April 5, 1932 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † April 11, 2016 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania) was an American neurosurgeon . He was a pioneer in microsurgical operations on the cranial nerves . The microvascular decompression , also known as the Jannetta operation , is used for various neurovascular compression syndromes, in particular trigeminal neuralgia .

Life

Jannetta earned a bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1953 . He then studied there until 1957 medicine . This was followed by advanced training courses in general surgery in Philadelphia and in neurosurgery at the University of California, Los Angeles . He was Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans . From 1971 to 1997 he held the chair of neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh . He was also Secretary of Health of Pennsylvania from 1995 to 1996. After finishing his university career, he worked at the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

While preparing cranial nerve preparations for a course, Jannetta noticed that small blood vessels can compress cranial nerves locally, which can lead to disturbances in the spread of excitation in the nerve. In 1966, Jannetta performed the first microvascular decompression of the facial nerve in a patient suffering from hemifacial spasm . In the same year, the procedure was successfully used together with Robert W. Rand in a patient with trigeminal neuralgia , with which this extremely painful disease could be treated causally in many patients. The necessary procedures for the surgical microscope was in the 1950s by Theodore Short been introduced and Robert Rand in neurosurgery.

In 1983 he was awarded the Olivechrona Prize, in 2000 he received the Fedor Krause Medal of the German Society for Neurosurgery and in 2006 the Zülch Prize of the Max Planck Society.

Jannetta was married to Ann Bowman in her first marriage and Diana Rose in her second marriage. The first marriage had six children. Jannetta died as a result of a fall.
