Career

When Leverkusen won the championship in the amateur league Mittelrhein in the 1974/75 season and then qualified in the promotion round for the 2nd Bundesliga , the defender of league competitor Bonner SC caught the attention of Bayer officials. For the 1975/76 round, Klimke and the other players Fred-Werner Bockholt , Hans-Jürgen Scheinert , Walter Posner , Willi Quasten , Wilfried Klinge and Norbert Ziegler joined the team of coach Manfred Rummel in the Ulrich Haberland Stadium in Leverkusen. On the first day of play, August 9, 1975, Leverkusen debuted with defender Peter Klimke in the away game against DJK Gütersloh in the 2nd division. The newcomer from Bonn made 33 appearances alongside veterans Matthias Hemmersbach and Gerhard Kentschke . The season was marked by the fight against relegation and Bayer needed two coach changes to reach the saving 15th place in the table. In February 1976 Radoslav Momirski replaced the promoted coach Rummel, but in April Willibert Kremer, the next coach , took over at Bayer Leverkusen. Under Kremer, Leverkusen won the championship in the second division in the 1978/79 season and was promoted to the Bundesliga. Klimke had scored a goal in 36 appearances alongside teammates Jürgen Gelsdorf , Klaus Bruckmann , Thomas Hörster , Peter Szech and Dieter Herzog .

When the third Bundesliga season 1981/82 was permanently about staying up, Gerhard Kentschke replaced coach Kremer on November 23, 1981. Klimke came in 20 appearances and Leverkusen in 16th place. He played his last Bundesliga game on March 6, 1982 in the 1: 5 defeat at Eintracht Braunschweig. He was loyal to the Werkself for seven years, from 1975 to 1982. In the summer of 1982 he went back to the amateur camp and joined the Siegburger SV 04 .

Klimke has made 57 Bundesliga appearances (two goals) and 125 games in the 2nd Bundesliga (two goals).
