Plastic pigeon in Worpswede

Peter Lehmann was the son of the Bremen doctor and collector Alexander Lehmann and his wife Hanna, geb. Plump. The sculptor Wilhelm Gerstel married into his mother's family and Lehmann studied with his pupil Ernst Gorsemann from 1939 to 1940 at the art college in Bremen , and from 1948 to 1952 there again with Ernst Krieg and Herbert Kubica . In 1955 he and his wife, the sculptor Angelika Billaudelle, were given a state studio in Koblenz. In 1962 the couple moved to Worpswede , where his wife died in 1964.

Since 1968 Lehmann lived and worked in Bissel, in the municipality of Großenkneten .

One of his well-known works is the bronze sculpture swineherd and his herd at the end of Sögestraße in Bremen , which was built in 1974 and symbolizes the origin of the street name ( Söge = Low German for sows ). In 1965 he also created the Streithammel , which stand before the Oldenburg Regional Court , and in 1979 the Eberborg Fountain in Cloppenburg. In Bremen the stone sea lion group Harmonie can still be found in the Neue Vahr . In 1977 the figure group Nachtwächter with two dogs was set up in Korbach and in 1982 the strawberry picker with children in Arsten and in 1984 Fipps, the monkey , created in 1965 based on a picture story by Wilhelm Busch , was placed in the Schnoor . In the inner courtyard of the Kronenhof at Marktgasse 8 in Rheinfelden stands Lehmann's 1982 group of sculptures, Die Rheinfelder Gänse .

Lehmann was artistically based on Henry Moore (without adopting his abstraction), Ernst Barlach and Bernhard Heiliger .
