Peter Maria Schuster

Peter Maria Schuster ( October 26, 1939 in Vienna - December 26, 2019 in Pöllauberg ) was an Austrian physicist and writer . His work on the history of science was primarily devoted to the presentation of Austrian physicists and their achievements.

life and work

Schuster studied history , Japanese studies , mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna . In 1967 he received his doctorate in physics. First he worked at the Carl Zeiss company in Oberkochen , Germany. In 1976 he founded his own trading company in Germany, from 1982 he built the industrial company “AOL-Dr. Schuster - Analytics, Optics, Laser Technology ”.

From 1988 Schuster did intensive research on the history of physics , in particular on the Austrian pioneers of modern physics - Ludwig Boltzmann , Christian Doppler , Victor Franz Hess , Joseph Loschmidt and Ernst Mach . In 2006 he founded the “History of Physics” section of the Austrian Physical Society (ÖPG), which he headed until 2015. In 2007 he founded the “Victor Franz Hess Society”. From 2007 to 2017 he headed the “History of Physics” group of the European Physical Society (EPS). In 2010 he also initiated a center for the history of physics in Pöllau, Echophysics , which has valuable historical physics equipment.

Schuster published numerous works on the history of science and literary essays. He also worked as a screenwriter for television films. The films featured well-known Austrian physicists. He was a member of the Austrian PEN Club , the Austrian Writers' Association and the Academia Europaea .
