He completed his training at the German School of Journalism in Munich and at the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University College, Evanston , Illinois, USA. This was followed by an internship at the Münchner Abendzeitung . In 1976 he was commissioned by Gruner + Jahr to develop a magazine. On October 4th 1978 PM - Peter Moosleitner's interesting magazine appeared at the kiosk for the first time . Gruner + Jahr board member Rolf Poppe suggested the title: Since the publishing management did not like the other proposed titles, he wrote that suggestion on a piece of paper. Poppe may have assumed that Moosleitner's first name was Peter. However, GM with Moosleitner's first name Gerhard would have threatened a conflict with the General Motors brand . Moosleitner subsequently had the name Peter entered in his passport as an artist name. He was still known as Gerhard within his editorial team. Moosleitner was editor-in-chief from 1978 to 1994 and publisher of the magazine from 1978 to 1998.
