Peter Nicolaisen

Peter Nicolaisen (born April 13, 1936 in Hamburg ; † February 23, 2013 in Flensburg ) was a German English scholar , literary scholar and university professor who dealt in particular with American literature and became known for his monographs on authors such as William Faulkner and Joseph Conrad .

Life

After graduating from high school , Nicolaisen studied English and literature at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and has meanwhile also completed study visits to the southern states of the USA . In 1963 he received his doctorate from Kiel University. phil. with a dissertation on the poet Edward Taylor entitled The Imagery in Edward Taylor's Preparatory Meditations .

In the following years he worked as a research assistant and research assistant at the University of Kiel, focusing on American studies and the cultural and literary history of the USA. In 1977 he completed his habilitation at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel with a habilitation thesis on Ernest Hemingway with the title The Representation of Reality in Ernest Hemingway's Early Work . This was followed by monographs on authors such as William Faulkner and Joseph Conrad, which were also translated into other languages ​​such as Catalan , Portuguese and Turkish .

Most recently, Nicolaisen accepted a professorship at the English Department of the University of Flensburg, founded in 1994, and taught there until his retirement . At times he also worked as a visiting professor at various universities in the USA. With his monograph on the third US President Thomas Jefferson , published in 1995 , he contributed to the objectification of the debate about his attitude to slavery . In the last years of his life he also published anthologies on the literature of Northern Germany with texts by authors such as Theodor Storm and Wilhelm Lehmann .
