Peter Sauerbaum

Peter Sauerbaum (* 1945 in Halle (Saale) ) is a German lawyer and cultural manager .

Live and act

The son of the tenor Heinz Sauerbaum and a prima ballerina attended school first in Mannheim , then in Berlin . After high school he studied at the Free University of Berlin (FU), a study of jurisprudence . He had learned to sing from his father, but at the same time had come to understand that he shouldn't take up his profession. So he began his career as an administrative lawyer in the legal department of the FU. He did this job for three years. From 1977 to 1981 he was personal advisor to the Senator for Culture Dieter Sauberzweig , and until 1992 he was head of department in the Berlin cultural administration. He then moved for a short time as designated administrative director to the State Opera Unter den Linden . This was followed by seven years with the Berliner Ensemble (BE) until the end of 1999 . He was artistic director there , but through reorganization converted the state theater into a private limited company and acted as a managing partner. He strengthened the financial scope of action of the deficit and therefore heavily dependent on subsidies BE with sponsorship contracts . Above all , he did not want to forego the reputable but expensive guest tours “from Venice to Moscow ” (Sauerbaum). He also wrote a newspaper article on the sponsorship complex that was published in the Berliner Zeitung in 1995 .

Sauerbaum changed several times and in 2000 became chief controller at the Deutsches Theater , then managing director of the Jewish Museum . In 2002, although planned for the previous year, he took up the post of Managing Director of the Deutsche Oper . From 2006 to 2018 he was director of the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt (Oder) . Sauerbaum has been the artistic director of the Choriner Music Summer since autumn 2018 . Sauerbaum is the recipient of the Cross of Honor for Science and Art of the Republic of Austria and the Great Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .
