Peter Schaufler (born November 28, 1940 - † August 16, 2015 in Salzburg ), Senator hc, was a German entrepreneur , art collector and patron .

Entrepreneur

In 1979, after the death of his father, Ulrich Schaufler, Peter Schaufler took over the company Bitzer Kühlmaschinenbau, founded in 1934 and headquartered in Sindelfingen, as managing partner . In the decades that followed, he built the medium-sized family company into the world market leader for refrigeration and air conditioning systems and refrigerant compressors. Today Bitzer SE is a European stock corporation with 32 subsidiaries and 3400 employees in over 90 countries.

Art collector and patron

Together with his wife, Christiane Schaufler-Münch, Peter Schaufler collected contemporary art for over 30 years. The Schaufler collection is one of the most important art collections in Baden-Württemberg , alongside those of Siegfried Weishaupt , Frieder Burda , Reinhold Würth , Friedrich Erwin Rentschler , Josef Froehlich and the Grässlin family . In order to make the collection of more than 3,000 works accessible to the public, Schaufler had the old factory halls in Sindelfingen converted into exhibition halls and supplemented with a new building. Since June 2010, works of art from the Schaufler Collection have been exhibited there as SCHAUWERK Sindelfingen on around 8,000 m². The sponsor of the art museum is The Schaufler Foundation, founded by Schaufler in 2005 .

The Schaufler Collection contains important works of contemporary art since the 1960s, including from the Düsseldorf artist group ZERO , Arte Povera , Minimal Art , Conceptual Art and Concrete Art . In addition to painting and sculpture, light works, room installations and contemporary photography are represented with prominent works by, among others, Hanne Darboven , Imi Knoebel , Lucio Fontana , Günther Uecker and Anselm Kiefer .

Honors

The University of Hohenheim made him an honorary senator for his services to the further development of science and research, especially in the field of refrigeration and air conditioning technology . On June 9, 2010, Peter Schaufler received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his cultural and scientific commitment and as an appreciation for his life's work. In 2013 the city ​​of Rottenburg am Neckar named a street leading to the Bitzer plant in the industrial area in the Ergenzingen district in his honor as Peter-Schaufler-Straße . In 2014, Peter Schaufler received the Baden-Württemberg Founder's Prize .
