Petra Aigner

Petra Aigner (born March 12, 1974 in Linz ) is an Austrian - British sociologist and migration researcher .

Education and career

Petra Aigner studied after graduation at the Academic Gymnasium Linz the subjects sociology and business in the UK and Ireland, first at the University of Birmingham , and then on (B.Soc.Sc. (Hons)., 1998) Trinity College Dublin (TCD; M.Phil, 2000), and also obtained a Ph.D. in social sciences (2005).

She began her scientific career in 2000 as a TCD Postgraduate Research Award Fellow (2000/2001), and continued as an IRCHSS (Irish Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences) Research Award Fellow (2001/2003). She then continued to work at TCD as a Research Fellow, Research Officer, and Research Associate (until 2008). She continued her academic work at the Leeds Social Science Institute (LSSI, University of Leeds ) as Research Associate for the project "African migration to the UK" (2008/2009), and then moved to Danube University Krems (Department for Migration and Globalization), where she worked on various research projects until 2010 and on setting up the university course "Migration Management".

She was also an EU Marie Curie Fellow at the European Forum for Migration Studies (EFMS), University of Bamberg (2003/2004).

She also has an MBA from Liverpool University (Laureate Online Education, graduation June 2012).

Since 2010 she has been assistant professor at the Institute for Sociology at Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz, where she mainly works in the areas of migration sociology , migration research and empirical social research.

2018 habilitation they are at the JKU with the work "Multidimensional approaches to Ethnic Entrepreneurship. A case study on the socio-economic and socio-cultural significance of ethnic entrepreneurship in Austria ” for the subject of the entire“ sociology ”and has been working as an associate university professor since then .

Fields of work

The main field of work is the entire field of international " Migration Studies ". Topics are here:

  • General migration theories;
  • Aspects of international and worldwide migration ;
  • Migration and regional integration, migration and labor or labor market, and so-called irregular migration (in each case in national contexts);
  • Questions of flight and asylum in the international migration context;
  • All questions about immigration in and to Austria, as well
  • "Ethnic Entrepreneurship" and
  • Management of diversity, especially ethnic diversity .

Petra Aigner also deals with sociological theory , in particular with social integration and with the sociological classic Max Weber with regard to his theory of rule .
