The church in Westeraccum

The Evangelical Lutheran St. Peter 's Church is located in the East Frisian town of Westeraccum (municipality of Dornum ). It is a brick church from the 13th century. A special feature is the three-bay vault.

History and description of the building

Organ gallery under the vault

The brick church was built around 1270 as a single-nave apse hall on a granite base on a high terp . The three domical vaults have been preserved with their ornamental paintings from the years 1270 to 1280, which were rediscovered and restored in 2000 during renovation work carried out under the chipped plaster.

This church also underwent structural changes over time. The old arched portals with granite framing in the north and south walls were bricked up later. The long sides are broken through by three windows, all of which were later enlarged and provided with pointed arches. In the semicircular apse there are three arched windows, the middle of which is now walled up. While these windows date from the time of construction, the shape of the apse roof was changed in the 17th century. Today it is covered with copper. A new window was broken into the west gable. There is a hagioscope on the eastern south wall .

The compact, closed-type bell tower was erected separately on the south-east corner of the church. It has round acoustic arcades, corner pillars and side buttresses. The masonry is decorated with a frieze below the eaves. A swan serves as a weather vane on the hipped roof . The belfry has been rebuilt several times and only essentially goes back to the time the church was built.

Furnishing

The richly decorated baroque pulpit by the carver Andreas Danhast dates from 1694 and has a staircase, the door of which is crowned with music- making putti and carvings. It is flanked by the statuettes of the reformers Jan Hus and Martin Luther , which are represented together with their symbolic birds: Hus with the goose and Luther with the swan. The door is currently on the north wall. The pulpit is decorated with twisted columns and the sound cover is carved. The evangelists, Moses, Aaron and the prophets are carved out in the fields of the pulpit and on the bell. A gravestone from the 18/19. Century shows ship representations. The altarpiece with the Lord's Supper between fluted columns dates from 1665, the chandelier from 1698, the votive ships from 1932 and 1990. The baptismal font made of Belgian syenite probably dates from the 17th century.

organ

Because the Esensian organ builder Arnold Rohlfs created a similar prospectus in Westerholt in the first half of the 19th century , the work in Westeraccum was also assigned to him. However, it is the late Biedermeier prospectus of the organ from Pewsum , which Gerd Sieben Janssen created between 1857 and 1861. In 1972 , the Alfred Führer company built a new interior with seven registers on a manual and attached pedal behind the listed front of the case with its carving by Janssen, which unfortunately only survived in fragments . On the gallery parapet, the virtues are depicted in eight picture cartouches, which are separated by carved flower ornaments: In the middle the three Christian virtues faith, love, hope, supplemented by “patience”, flanked by the four cardinal virtues : strength and temperance on the left, and on the right Wisdom, here titled “caution”, and justice.
