Petro Kalnyshevskyi
Petro Iwanowytsch Kalnyschewskyj ( Ukrainian Петро Іванович Калнишевський , Russian Пётр Иванович Калнышевский Pyotr Ivanovich Kalnyschewski * 12. July 1691 in Pustowijtiwka , Russian Empire ; † October 31 . Jul / 12. November 1803 greg. In Solovetsky Monastery , Russian Empire) was a Ukrainian Cossack leader and the last Kosh - Ataman ( Кошовий отаман ) of the Zaporozhian Cossacks . He is a saint of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church . His feast day in the liturgy is November 13th .
Life
Petro Kalnyschewskyj was born in Pustowijtiwka ( Пустовійтівка ) in what is now Romny Raion in the Ukrainian Sumy Oblast .
Kalnyschewskyj was the first ataman of the Zaporozhye Cossacks in 1762 and again from 1765 to the destruction of the Sitsch in 1775. As an ataman he commanded the units of the Cossacks in the 5th Russian Turkish War and was then honored with the Order of St. Andrew the First Appointed and promoted to lieutenant general .
After the destruction of the Zaporozhian Sitsch in early June 1775, he was arrested on June 25, 1775 on the orders of Empress Catherine II and his entire property was confiscated. Kalnyshevskyi was initially taken to Moscow and then, at the suggestion of Prince Grigory Potemkin , he was imprisoned from the end of July 1776 in the Solovetsky Monastery on the Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea , where he spent the rest of his life. The Russian Emperor Alexander I pardoned him in 1801. However, Kalnyschewskyj remained in the monastery, meanwhile blind and very old. Two years later he died there at the age of 112 and was buried in a place of honor in the southern courtyard of the Transfiguration Cathedral of the Savior.
Canonization
Petro Kalnyschewskyj was on July 12, 2008 on the occasion of the 900th anniversary of St. Michael Convent and 1020th anniversary of the baptism of Kievan Rus in Kiev of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Kiev Patriarchate canonized . In December 2014 he was canonized by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate
