The Roman Catholic parish church Grafenstein is located in Grafenstein in the market town of Grafenstein in the Klagenfurt-Land district in Carinthia . The parish church of St. Stephan belongs to the deanery of Tainach / Tinje in the diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt . The church is a listed building .

history

1116 the consecration of a previous church and own church of the nobles of Lungau was named. The dilapidated church was probably rebuilt as a parish church. In 1158 the church went to the Gurk cathedral chapter and was named in 1184, 1265 and 1287. In 1629 the bailiwick goes to the Rosenberg.

architecture

The single-nave Romanesque choir tower church has a polygonal Gothic choir. The church has baroque chapels to the north and south . An open vestibule was added to the west. The massive east tower has large ogival sound windows and a baroque onion helmet . A Romanesque apse gable is partly preserved on the east wall under the choir roof . The Gothic west portal is ogival. On the north side is a carved Pietà from the 19th century in a round arched flat niche with a painted background by Josef Veiter (1887). To the east of the choir is a crucifix from the first half of the 17th century.

Furnishing

The high altar from the first half of the 18th century bears high-quality baroque figures, presumably by the sculptor Christoph Rudolph .
