In 1354 there was an own chaplain foundation, which was renewed in 1395. The initial patronage was Virgil von Salzburg and was changed to the Assumption in 1618.

The nave was still under construction in 1314. The choir was built around 1417. The church suffered fires in 1417, 1616, 1781 and 1865 with various changes and alterations. In 1616 the construction management lay with the cathedral builder Santino Solari . After the fire in 1865, it was remodeled with a new consecration in 1872. In the third quarter of the 19th century, the tower on the top floors was renewed according to the plans of the architect Josef Weßicken and completed in 1879.

architecture

in the nave to the choir

The dominant, in the core, late Romanesque church building with a Gothic choir and north tower stands lengthways behind the northern city wall and is surrounded by a cemetery.

Church exterior

The basilica, three-aisled rectangular nave shows circular windows in the upper aisles between buttresses protruding slightly, the lower aisles have arched windows. The western front has a projecting central projection with a neo-Romanesque triangular gable. The chamfered, round-arched west portal has a tympanum in relief , above it a round arch niche with a circular window and above it triple windows and in each of the side aisle areas a round arched window. The western front shows round arch friezes with a tooth cut as decoration.

The higher Gothic choir around 1417 with a polygonal end shows four-stepped buttresses with small gables and three-pass tracery. The high lancet windows have tracery from the third quarter of the 19th century. The single-storey sacristy in the southern corner of the choir appears as an extension of the side aisle.

The tower in the northern choir corner has six floors structured by friezes and corner bevels, bifor windows on the fifth floor, coupled windows with three columns around 1887 on the sixth floor, the tower closes with triangular gables and a pyramid point. The eastern and western side of the tower shows the coat of arms of Salzburg Archbishop Markus Sittikus von Hohenems . A chiselled head is walled in to the east on the second floor.

Church interior

The three-aisled five-bay nave has ribbed vaults in the central nave with belt arches on wall templates on low pillars with capitals and round arches to the side aisles. The side aisles have groined vaults and girders. The gallery on round arches shows a parapet with four-pass tracery. The triumphal arch is rounded. The three-bay Gothic choir with a five-eighth end is higher than the nave. The choir has a Gothic ribbed vault on services, belt ribs and round keystones.

There are eight pictures on the high walls of the central nave, one named by Josef Gold (1911–1912). The ogival tracery windows in the choir show glass paintings by Josef Widmoser (1959).

Furnishing

Behind the simple high altar is a tabernacle with a crucifix created by the sculptor Herbert J. Schneider (1961).

The northern side altar shows the image of the Sacred Heart in a baroque frame as a copy of an original in St. Stephan in Vienna. The carving of the Assumption of Mary with a halo was created by Johann Piger around 1885.
