The Church of St. John the Baptist is the Roman Catholic parish church of Sankt Johann ob Hohenburg in the municipality of Söding-Sankt Johann in western Styria . Its history goes back to the end of the 13th century.

history

The first written mention of the church as the parish "St. Johannes unter Krembs" took place in 1292. In the 16th century the dilapidated church came as a branch to the parish of Mooskirchen . Through efforts by the Barons von Jell and the Barons von Moll , the church at Hohenburg Castle was restored and a pastor was appointed. On April 16, 1697, Sankt Johann became an independent parish again.

In 1844 the parish church was so dilapidated that it was closed and had to be demolished in 1848. The construction of the new church began on August 16, 1849, and the sacred building was blessed on July 21, 1850. The consecration was carried out on September 3, 1860 by Prince-Bishop Ottokar Maria von Attems . In 1988 the outside and inside were renovated.

The tombstone of Pernhart von Pranckh, which is in the entrance hall

The north- facing church was built by the builder Karl Ohmeyer according to a design by Carl Schaumburg in historicizing Renaissance forms . The slender church tower is 45.2 meters high and is located on the southern facade. It houses four bells.

The neo-Gothic interior such as the altars, the baptismal font and the pulpit date from between 1870 and 1872 and were designed by Franz Kelz . The altar painting on the high altar made by the Viennese painter Uiz shows the baptism of Jesus and is a copy of a portrait by the painter Guide Reni . Under the choir there is a small chapel in which there is an altar from the old church. In the cafeteria of the high altar, some gravestones from the 17th and 18th centuries are walled in, which have also been transferred here from the previous church. In the western entrance hall is the full-length tombstone made of red marble of Pernhart von Pranckh , who died in 1525, showing him in full armor.

Several pictures painted by Franz Nagler hang in the church . The nativity figurines were created by the West Styrian sculptor Alfred Schlosser in the early 1970s .
