Parish Church of St. Martin

The parish church of St. Martin is the Roman Catholic parish church of Mumpf in the canton of Aargau . It stands near the bank of the Rhine . The church, consecrated to St. Martin of Tours , dates back in part to the 10th century. Over time, it acquired an early Baroque exterior and was heavily modified several times (most recently in 1957).

history

Although the church was first mentioned in a document in 1302, various archaeological investigations and cross-comparisons indicate that it was built in the 10th century as a separate church of the Säckingen Abbey . Until 1803, when the Kollatur passed to the canton of Aargau, a member of the Säckinger Münster clergy was responsible for pastoral care. Until 1938, the parish also included the Wallbach community .

In 1541 the medieval building was extended to the west and the church tower that still exists today was added , and the nave was rebuilt in 1683 . When the choir threatened to collapse, it was replaced in 1741. In 1903 the exterior was renovated, and from 1939 to 1941 a total renovation with the addition of a second sacristy . The choir was demolished in 1956/57 and replaced by a new building that was around three times larger.

Building

The oldest part of the east-facing church building is the squat-looking late Gothic church tower from 1541. This is followed by the two-axis nave from the late 17th century with a gable roof . The lancet windows are cut into the walls of the nave with strongly bevelled reveals and have two lanceolated tracery . There is a sundial at the south window on the tower side . A tent roof rises above the modern hexagonal choir ; it takes over the eaves and slightly towers over the ridge line. The side lengths of the choir correspond to the width of the nave. Inside, you get to the nave through the barrel-vaulted tower ground floor, which serves as a vestibule. Historicistic round discs in the vertices of the windows contain representations of Eucharistic symbols.
