The Roman Catholic parish church Steinberg an der Rabnitz is located in the village of Steinberg in the municipality of Steinberg-Dörfl in the Oberpullendorf district in Burgenland . It is consecrated to St. Wenceslas and belongs to the dean's office in Oberpullendorf in the Eisenstadt diocese . The building is a listed building .

history

The parish was probably founded in the Middle Ages, after which it was temporarily Protestant . The current parish was built between 1647 and 1651. The medieval church stood in a different location away from the market on a mountain. The remains of the medieval church building are still visible today. According to the inscription with a chronogram above the west portal, today's classicist church building dates from 1785 and was renovated in 1914. According to the inscription on the wedge in the sacristy portal , the church was restored in 1954. The tower underwent an exterior renovation in 1974.

The church is a high, single-nave building with a recessed choir of the same height and a semicircular apse. The three-story church tower is in front. It is crowned by a brick onion helmet. The sacristy with volute gable adjoins the west side of the choir. The north and west portal are decorated with plaited ornamentation.

Church interior

The nave has three bays. It is divided by double belt arches that rest on Ionic double pilasters . In between is the square vault . The three-axis gallery rests on barrel vaults and has a balustrade that curves forwards and upwards. The triumphal arch is rounded. The choir yoke is barrel vaulted.

Furnishing

The high altar from around 1785 is a tall architectural structure. The remarkable altarpiece shows the martyrdom of St. Wenceslas. The tabernacle is decorated with braided ornamentation. On the side of the wall are figures of Saints Anthony and Stephen and two large candlestick angels. The right side altar from 1785 is dedicated to St. John Nepomuk . A figure of this saint stands in the structure with decorations in the Rococo style. The left side altar with Lourdes grotto was built in the second half of the 19th century.

The pulpit was built around 1785. There are reliefs on the basket depicting the handover of the keys, the “ Return of the Prodigal Son ” and the “ Fall of Paul ”. There is a figure of the Good Shepherd on the cover .

The silver rococo traffic light was created around 1760.
