Steuerberg parish church

The parish church in Steuerberg is consecrated to Saints Peter and Paul . A church in Steuerberg was first mentioned in 1131 as a branch of Zammelsberg . It was not until the 18th century that Steuerberg became an independent parish.

Building description

The church was originally a Romanesque choir tower church built around 1300 . In the last quarter of the 15th century, the building was converted into a wall pillar church and a wider choir was added to the tower. The former leg chamber is located under the choir and is supported by an octagonal central column. The tower with large ogival sound openings is crowned by a slender pyramid point. All roofs of the church are covered with stone slabs. The nave is wider than the choir, the canopy is supported by polygonal Gothic stone pillars. The west portal, marked 1490, with a donkey back end in relief and shoulder arch is profiled by round bars . Next to it is a Gothic holy water font. The wall paintings on the west facade depicting the death of the Virgin , the crucifixion and the sacrifices of Cain and Abel date from the first third of the 16th century. On the north side of the nave is a Roman epitaph for the natives Catron and Sincoria.

A ribbed vault rises above the nave. The Romanesque tower square is groin vaulted and opens to the nave with a Romanesque round arch with fighters . The former Romanesque eastern arch was changed to a pointed arch in the Gothic . In the three-bay choir with a three-eighth closure, a ribbed vault with a rosette keystone rests on consoles. Tartsches are attached to two consoles .

A door studded with iron bars leads from the square of the tower into the groin-vaulted Gothic sacristy . The Gothic windows in the choir and nave were partially changed, and a Romanesque window in the choir square was bricked up.

The wall painting remains in the tower square with the depictions of the throne of Solomon , the dream of Nebuchadnezzar , the Annunciation and a foolish and a wise virgin date from the beginning of the 14th century. The full-length depictions of Saints George and Eustachius as well as the half-length saints in the three passes in the nave vault were created at the end of the 15th century.

Facility

The high altar from the third quarter of the 18th century fills the entire width and height of the choir. The rococo altar with curved column architecture bears the church patron in the middle, the saints Oswald (?) And Florian on the side and the farmer saints Notburga and Isidor above the sacrificial passages . The coronation of Mary can be seen on the altarpiece and the Last Supper on the tabernacle .

The left side altar from the beginning of the 18th century contains a late Gothic Madonna with a renewed crown and scepter from around 1500.

The right side altar from the second half of the 18th century shows St. Stephen and to the side the figures of the Evangelist John and St. Joseph .

An 18th century crucifix hangs on the triumphal arch . The polygonal late Gothic baptismal font next to the staircase was provided with a modern cover.

The crucifixion group with expressive figures from around 1520 is probably a Styrian work with Lower Bavarian influence and originally comes from the Benesirnitz church . In contrast, the Steuerberger Lenten Cloth, made around 1520, is kept in the Diocesan Museum in Klagenfurt .

Other features of the church include a painting of the Holy Family from the late 18th century in the original frame and the Renaissance - Epitaph the caregiver to Steuerberg Cyril Tupitz († 1571).
