The Weitensfeld parish church is consecrated to John the Evangelist . The church on the western edge of Weitensfeld is surrounded by a formerly fortified cemetery wall. The eastern defense tower from the beginning of the 16th century with loopholes and traces of a drawbridge now serves as a gateway to the cemetery. The church, first mentioned in 1285, was a branch of Altenmarkt until 1752.

Building description

The church consists of a nave, probably renewed after the fire of 1562, and a Gothic choir from the first half of the 14th century. The choir with four two-lane tracery windows is supported by three-tiered buttresses . There is a Gothic chapel on the south side and the sacristy to the west . The Gothic tower on the north side of the choir has acoustic windows with tracery in the west and south. The baroque onion helmet was renewed in 1973.

In the four-bay nave, a barrel vault with stitch caps and stucco ribs rests on pillars and semi-columns. An organ built in 1993 stands on the three-axis west gallery over round arched pillar arcades and a stucco rib cross vault. A chamfered, pointed triumphal arch connects the nave with the two-bay choir with a five-eighth end . The ribbed vault in the choir with hangers has relief heads on the keystones . A sacrament niche and a lava niche have been preserved in the choir . The chapel on the first floor of the tower has a ribbed vault from the first half of the 14th century, on the keystone of which the Lamb of God is depicted. The southern chapel, consecrated to John the Baptist , with a five-eighth closure and ribbed vault from the middle of the 14th century is open to the choir with a large pointed arch.

Murals

The frescoes in the south chapel, painted in the soft style after 1406 , were uncovered in 1966/1967. The remains of an adoration of the Magi can be seen on the west wall . On the north wall the Annunciation , the Visitation and below the Saints Barbara , Katharina , Agnes , Dorothea and Margaretha are depicted. The death of the Virgin on the east wall and the northeast slope was mostly painted over at the end of the 16th century. Above is the depiction of a coronation of Mary .

There are depictions of saints in the window reveals of the south-east and south-facing walls from the end of the choir. The frescoes on the south wall of the choir are heavily fragmented. Below is a donor figure and a memorial inscription from 1406 for Duke Wilhelm . The paintings in the choir vault show the four evangelists . The delicate tendril paintings date from the 17th century.

Facility

The high altar from the second quarter of the 18th century houses a Madonna and Child in the central niche, flanked by the evangelist Johannes and Johann Nepomuk . Next to the altar are the statues of Saints Joseph and Anthony of Padua on high console platforms . The top picture shows the Holy Trinity . The conclusion is the eye of God in the halo.

The left side altar from 1654 consists of an aedicule on a pedestal and a gable with cartilage cartouche as an attachment, crowned by a monstrance and vases. The column shafts are decorated with vine tendrils, the side ears, the base and the picture frame of the central zone with cartilage. The altar shows the evangelist Johannes in the middle picture, Maria in the upper picture, on the base a donor picture and on the antependium again the church saint Johannes. The structure and decoration of the right side altar resembles the left and shows Saint Ulrich in the center image , a coat of arms with three acorns in the top, a donor kneeling in front of the altar on the base and Saint Oswald on the antependium .

The pulpit was built in 1761. The carved figures of the four evangelists sit on the bulges of the pulpit. The images between the figures represent the Mannalese , the Brazen Serpent and the Ark of the Covenant . The back wall of the pulpit depicts Moses on Mount Sinai . A female figure sits on the sound cover, symbolizing the three theological virtues with her attributes , faith with a cross and the tablets of the law , hope with an anchor and love with a flaming heart. The statues in the nave from the first half of the 18th century and the 19th century represent the evangelist Matthew and Saint Sebastian . The crucifix , carved around 1500, is in safekeeping.

Karner

The Karner south of the church, consecrated in 1451, is an eight-sided, Gothic building with mighty buttresses and a polygonal choir in the east. A disproportionate vestibule is built on the west side. Today it serves as a funeral hall.
