The Church of St. Aegydius is the Roman Catholic parish church of the market and the market town of Semriach in Styria . The history of today's church construction goes back to the beginning of the 16th century.

history

The first documentary mention of a church is in 1237. It was probably built around 1150. This building was demolished around 1500 and replaced by today's late Gothic hall church. The nave was completed in 1505 and the choir in 1543. Until 1912 the church was surrounded by a cemetery. Restoration work took place in 1960 and 1987.

The interior overlooks the organ

The church was built as a late Gothic hall church with an external length of around 44 meters. The nave and the choir have two or three tiered buttresses and a surrounding coffin cornice . The nave has four-lane tracery windows , the choir on the south side two-lane. One figural and two inscribed Roman stones from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD are walled into the outer wall. There is a stepped entrance portal on the west side of the building, and a keel arch portal on the south side . In the northwest of the building there is a small stair tower. On the north side is the square church tower with a pyramid roof , which was built at the same time as the choir. It has ogival sound windows and a ribbed star vault . One of the bells was cast by Johann A. de la Porta in 1648.

Inside

The three-aisled , four-bay nave is a hall with octagonal, grooved pillars without capitals . A star rib vault rests above the central nave , above the two narrower, longitudinally rectangular side aisles, cross rib vaults on wall services . On the west wall of the nave there are two half bundle pillars that support the vault. The keystone of the north aisle shows the coat of arms of Leonhard von Keutschach , the keystone of the south aisle shows the coat of arms of Jakob Grazer, a former pastor. There is a bundled rib bracket on each side of the front arch . The right shows a man's head with a beard. The three-bay long choir has a five-eighth end and a mesh rib vault resting on grooved wall templates with a three-parallel rib configuration. The keystone of the choir shows the coat of arms of the former pastor Conrad Jagerhofer. On the southern side of the choir is the sacristy with a shoulder arch portal . The original, Gothic west gallery was demolished in 1730 and replaced by a three-axis, baroque one by Anton Nagl. The old beginnings of the vaults are still recognizable.

inventory

The neo-Gothic high altar was built in 1869 based on a design by Hans Pascher . There are figures made by Peter Neuböck on it . Pascher and Neuböck also designed the pulpit in 1898 . The original altarpiece of the high altar, painted by Franz Ignaz Flurer in 1744 , is now in the choir together with a portrait of St. Donatus . The right side altar, consecrated in 1720, has a picture painted in 1653 depicting the baptism of Christ. On it are figures that are attributed to Philipp Jakob Straub . The left side altar, consecrated in 1653, was designed in the cartilage style. In the tabernacle there is a figure of the Scourge Christ from the last quarter of the 18th century, probably from the circle of Jakob Payer . On the foremost pillars are figures from the workshop of Philipp Jakob Straub from around 1735 to 1740, depicting the saints Dismas and Johannes Nepomuk . A statue of St. Aegydius from the second third of the 18th century stands on the front arch . A wounded doe is depicted above the high altar. A one-headed royal eagle is depicted in the arched field above the western entrance portal . The cross-way reliefs modeled by Peter Neuböck date from 1906. Inside is a tombstone from 1756, outside two Roman stones. The organ was built in 1742 by Johann G. Mitterreiter. Its case is decorated with a representation of King David made in 1744 .
