Philip Benjamin Neil Frederick Parkes "Phil" Parkes (born August 8, 1950 in Sedgley ) is a former English football player on the position of goalkeeper . He was considered one of the best goalkeepers in the history of his longtime clubs Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United .

Life

Walsall FC

Parkes received his first professional contract in 1968 with the then third division club FC Walsall , for which he completed a total of 52 games.

Queens Park Rangers

In 1970 he moved to Queens Park Rangers , who were playing in the second division at the time, for £ 15,000 . In the 1972/73 season Parkes was one of the success guarantees of his team, which won the runner-up behind Burnley FC and made it to the top division . Three years later he was one of the most successful team in the history of the Rangers, who in the 1975/76 season were the only time English runner-up behind Liverpool FC . In the following 1976/77 season, the Rangers advanced to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup , where they failed despite a 3-0 home win against AEK Athens because the second leg in Athens was lost with the same result and QPR in the subsequent penalty shoot-out with 6 : 7 defeated.

At the end of the 1977/78 season , QPR was able to avoid relegation due to a point scored over London rivals West Ham United , but rose in the following 1978/79 season .

West Ham United

After the relegation of the Rangers, Parkes moved within the second division for the then record transfer fee for a goalkeeper of £ 565,000, - to last year's relegated West Ham. In his first season with the Hammers, Parkes won the FA Cup by beating London rivals Arsenal 1-0 in the final , while only finishing seventh in the second division . But West Ham won the second division championship in the following season with a convincing record of 66-18 points, lost only four games and in the end had 13 points more than the runner-up Notts County . The biggest success with the Hammers in the league was a third place at the end of the first division season 1985/86 . Just three years later, however, Parkes experienced his greatest disappointment with the Hammers and rose with them at the end of the 1988/89 season in the second division.

Ipswich Town

In 1990 Parkes moved to Ipswich Town FC , for which he only played three games and soon after moved to management.

National team

On April 3, 1974, Parkes came in a friendly against Portugal (0-0) for his only international appearance . Despite being one of the best English goalkeepers of his time, he was unlucky that Ray Clemence and Peter Shilton were always preferred.
