Philipp Wilhelm Gercken

Philipp Wilhelm Gercken (born January 5, 1722 in Salzwedel ; † June 26, 1791 in Worms ) was a German historian and heraldist .

Life

The son of the businessman Georg Gercken was orphaned at the age of four and grew up with relatives. After having private lessons, he attended school in the old town of Salzwedel from 1738. Soon I went to the grammar school in Lüneburg . There he carried out the first archival studies that determined his life from then on. From 1741 he studied law and history at the University of Halle , in 1743 he moved to the University of Leipzig . In 1745 he settled on the Wollenrade estate near Osterburg, and in 1761 he moved to the Salzwedel Castle.

Gercken devoted himself above all to researching the history of the Mark Brandenburg .
