Phosphorus pentaiodide is a chemical compound with the empirical formula PI 5 .
In contrast to the homologous phosphorus pentabromide , chloride and fluoride , it does not have a trigonal-bipyramidal structure. In solution it is an adduct between phosphorus triiodide (PI 3 ) and an iodine molecule (I 2 ). A cocrystallizate of phosphorus triiodide and iodine forms in the solid .
Extraction and presentation
Phosphorus pentaiodide can be prepared by reacting sodium iodide with phosphorus pentachloride in methyl iodide .
