Phyllis Whitney

Phyllis Ayame Whitney (born September 9, 1903 in Yokohama , Japan , † February 8, 2008 in Faber, Virginia ) was an American mystery author.

Whitney was born in Japan and grew up there for the first few years. She spent the remainder of her childhood in China, the Philippines, California and Texas. Occupations she held included jobs as a dance teacher, bookstore sales clerk, librarian, and, in the 1940s, editor of children's books for the Chicago Sun and Philadelphia Inquirer . In 1945 she was a course director at Northwestern University and from 1947 to 1958 at New York University , where she taught children's book writing.

As one of the few authors in her genre , she wrote books and stories for both teenagers and adults. She often chose exotic locations for her scenarios. In a review in the New York Times , she was once referred to as the "Queen of American Gothic".

The author has written more than seventy novels. In 1961 she was awarded the Edgar Award in the category Best Book for Children and Young People by the Mystery Writers of America (MWA) for her youth book The Mystery of the Haunted Pool . She won second prize from the same organization in 1964 for the novel The Mystery of the Hidden Hand , and the book also received the Sequoyah Award of Oklahoma. In 1975 she was elected President of the Mystery Writers of America. In 1988 she received the Grand Master Award for her life's work from the MWA .

In 1925 she married George A. Garner, the only daughter Georgia was born in 1934. The marriage was divorced in 1945. Since 1950 Whitney was married to Lovell F. Jahnke (1899–1973) for the second time.

Phyllis A. Whitney died in February 2008 at the age of 104 years at a pneumonia .
