The phyllonoma are the only genus of the family of Phyllonomaceae in the order of holly-like (Aquifoliales) within the angiosperms (Magnoliophyta). The genus only has areas in the Neotropics from Mexico to Peru .
description
The Phyllonoma species are trees and shrubs . The alternate leaves are simple. The leaf margin is serrated or smooth. The stipules are small.
The genus is easy to recognize by the fact that the bundled inflorescences are on their leaves (epiphyll). The small and inconspicuous flowers are hermaphroditic and four to five-fold. There are four to five green sepals and three to five green petals . There is only one circle with four to five free, fertile stamens . Two carpels have become an under constant ovary grown, with two free punches. The berries contain only a few (three to six) seeds.
The plants accumulate aluminum ions .
