life and work

Pierre-Francisque Caroubel was of Italian origin and lived in Paris from 1576. He was naturalized by a royal letter in 1583. In the same year he married Catherine Lemaire. Caroubel had a job with King Heinrich III. and his brother François-Hercule de Valois, duc d'Alençon . He kept his post as Violon Ordinaire de la Chambre du Roi even after Henry IV ascended the throne . Around 1610 he went to Wolfenbüttel , where he worked with Michael Praetorius at the court of Friedrich Ulrich , Duke of Braunschweig, to whom he part of the repertoire of Vingt-quatre Violons du Roy gave. Together with Praetorius, they arranged more complex five-part harmonizations of 82 dances, some of which already existed, of which 78 were published in Praetorius' Terpsichore in 1612 . Several Airs de ballet by Caroubel are included as manuscripts . Soon after his return to Paris, Caroubel died there in the summer of 1611. His son Nicolas-Francisque Caroubel took over his position in the royal orchestra after his father's death.
