Pierre Bossus (born August 10, 1935 in Geneva ; † June 10, 2000 , ibid) was a Swiss writer , alpinist and president of the Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme (UIAA) from 1976 to 1984.

Life and activities

Bossus attended the Latin department of the Collège de Genève , where he graduated from high school in 1954 . He then studied at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Geneva . He joined the SAC, Geneva section and was a board member in 1958.

In July 1968 he led the Geneva Greenland Expedition , which included nine first ascents on the Akuliaruseq peninsula north of Umanak in western Greenland.

Bossus as UIAA managing director and the then UIAA president Jean Juge flew to the Pamir Mountains in 1974 to visit the camp of the international expedition accompanied by Vitaly Mikhailovich Abalakov .

From 1976 to 1984 he was UIAA President . In 1977 he took part in the 23rd meeting of the International Commission for Alpine Rescue, ICAR, where he agreed on a convention on the division of labor between ICAR and UIAA. Concerns about the social and environmental effects of treks and expeditions in the great mountain ranges led to the UIAA declaration of Kathmandu in 1982 .

For many years he worked as a writer and, in addition to travel reports, created club and climbing guides for the French-Swiss Alps.
