Pierre Gerckens

Pierre Gerckens (born July 24, 1938 in Eupen , Belgium ) is a German-Belgian publisher and media manager.

Life

Pierre Gerckens, the son of a teacher's household, completed a commercial apprenticeship in Cologne in 1958 after graduating from high school in Brussels . From 1962 to 1966 he studied business administration at the University of Cologne . In 1967/1968 he studied at Princeton University and Columbia University . In 1969 he was in Cologne with a dissertation on the European Economic Community at Günter Schmölders to Dr. rer. pole. PhD.

In 1968 he became department director at the business newspaper Handelsblatt in Düsseldorf. In 1970 he became managing director of the Handelsblatt publishing group. In 1974 he bought along with Dieter von Holtzbrinck , the business magazine Wirtschaftswoche . From 1974 to 1986 he was CEO of the Handelsblatt publishing group. From 1987 to 1989, Gerckens was restructuring the regional newspaper Südkurier in Konstanz, which belongs to the Holtzbrinck group, and in 1986 he became a member of the management of the Stuttgart holding company of the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group . He was responsible for the integration of Main-Post and Tagesspiegel as well as the purchase of Macmillan Publishers . From 1999 to 2001 he was chairman of the supervisory board of the Handelsblatt publishing group and a member of the supervisory board of the Holtzbrinck group.

In 2003 he acquired the Berliner Tagesspiegel, which, however, was prohibited by the Federal Cartel Office. Until the end of 2013 he was editor of the Tagesspiegel together with Giovanni di Lorenzo and Hermann Rudolph .

He holds numerous honorary positions, including being Vice President of the Federal Association of German Newspaper Publishers (BDZV) . He is a member of the national board of trustees of AIESEC .

Gerckens is married to Thea Caroline Gerckens; the marriage produces three sons. Since 1962 he has been a member of the Catholic student union AV Rheinstein Cologne in the CV . He has been a member of the Order of Lazarus since 2004 . Together with his wife he founded the Gerckens Foundation.
