Pieter Jansz. Saenredam (born June 9, 1597 in Assendelft , † May 31, 1665 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch painter whose artistic focus was on architectural painting . He made a name for himself there with his innovative technology and became a role model for other architectural painters.

Jansz. is the short form of Janszoon and means "son of Jan" (Saenredam).

Career

Pieter Saenredam was the son of the engraver and cartographer Jan Saenredam , who was also one of his teachers. After the death of his father in 1608 he moved to Haarlem with his mother. Four years later he started with Frans Pietersz. de Grebber (* 1573; † around 1649) and was his pupil until 1622. After 1623 he worked as a freelance painter . In 1628 he decided to paint architectural views and from then on devoted himself entirely to architectural painting.

He was likely encouraged to specialize in this genre by his friend, the architect Jacob van Campen . It was also a Haarlem tradition to portray architecture . In addition, he wanted to carry out an art movement that demanded more of him than others.

His repertoire mainly included exterior and interior views of churches in the northern Netherlands. Saenredam lived and worked temporarily in 's-Hertogenbosch , Assendelft , Alkmaar , Utrecht , Amsterdam and Rhenen , but was mainly active in Haarlem, where he also died in 1665.

Saenredam is considered to be the first to exclusively depict existing buildings. He constructed perspective projections based on measurements and thus produced construction drawings with precise calculations and dimensions. He then transferred these to his paintings. Sometimes there were years between the sketches, construction drawings and the finished painting.

His technique was innovative and required experience with perspectives as well as a certain mathematical understanding. He was probably inspired by his collaboration with Pieter Wils , a mathematician , astronomer , town planner and engineer from Haarlem.
