Pietropaolo Parisio (also Pietro Paolo or Pier Paolo ) (* 1473 in Cosenza , † May 11, 1545 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal and lawyer .

Life

Parisio, who was born in Cosenza as the son of a senior civil servant and a Frenchwoman, studied law at the Universities of Padua and Bologna , where he received his doctorate from the civil lawyer Bartolomeo Sozzini on April 27, 1499 as Doctor iuris utriusque . He then married Gismonda , the daughter of Jacopo di Tarsi , 3rd Baron of Belmonte , and was a professor at the University of Bologna.

After the death of his wife, Parisio joined the clergy and from 1514 worked in the archives of the Roman Curia , the predecessor institution of today's Vatican Secret Archives . In 1521 he returned to his old place of work in Padua, where he gave lectures in civil law and canon law . The publication of several of his lectures earned him a considerable income and made him one of the well-known lawyers of his time. In September 1528 Parisio was elected Bishop of Anglona-Tursi , before he accepted a call to the University of Bologna in autumn 1531 , where he received a salary of 1,200 ducats per year and, among other things, taught the Spanish humanist and later Archbishop Antonio Agustín.

On August 2, 1537, Pope Paul III appointed Parisio as General Auditor of the Apostolic Chamber . A few months later, on January 11, 1538, Parisio was elected Bishop of Nusco , but was mostly represented by vicars due to his obligations in Rome in the administration of office . On December 19, 1539 he was elevated to cardinal with the titular church Santa Balbina all'Aventino .

In 1542 Parisio, who was a close confidante of Pope Paul III. was, with Giovanni Morone and Reginald Pole appointed papal legate for the Council of Trent , which should deal with the effects of the Reformation on the Church. Due to the “Fourth Italian War” between Emperor Charles V and Francis I of France, the beginning of the council had to be postponed to 1545 with the Bull Laetare Jerusalem , so that Parisio attended the council that only opened in December 1545 and thus after his death could no longer participate.

From January 9, 1544 to January 9, 1545 Parisio was chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals . He died on May 11, 1545 and was buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in Rome.
