Little is known about the early years of life. Since he was called the Dutch captain , it is believed that he acquired knowledge of fortress building in Holland . The name Pilooth means ' pilot '. The widow of a certain Gerd Everts Piloot, probably his father, asked the city of Emden to support her and her children in 1617 .

In 1602 he was already working as a surveyor. That year he worked on the outskirts of the island of Ulsda near Beerta in Oldambt . Three years later he was commissioned by the holders of participation along with the count's surveyor Heinrich Münting the neubedeichten polder Altbunderneuland at Neuschanz measured. As a reward, he received a piece of land that was still owned by his son Gerrit Everts in 1626. In 1607 he was involved in the surveying of new land on the Dollart to divide the land between the city of Emden and the Dutch province of Groningen.

At least since 1606 he has for Count Enno III. von Ostfriesland planned and realized fortress structures, first he was involved in the expansion of the Emder Wall . In March of this year he was paid to build grafts on the Roten Siel. Around 1612 he followed the call of Duke Adolf Friedrich I to Mecklenburg, who hired him to Martini as a master builder to build a fortress with a castle on the island of Poel in the Wismar Bay . During this time Pilooth drafted a plan of the order house of the Kraak Commandery , from which Adolf Friedrich wanted to create a hunting lodge for the wilderness near Jessenitz . At the same time he was working on renovation plans for Schwerin Castle . From winter 1612 to spring 1613 he had to travel to East Friesland again to complete Count Enno's buildings.

In 1613 he wrote an appraisal for the Sielacht Termunten in the Groningerland , in which he advised to build a floodgate in the village of 't Waar . As a member of the Reformed Church, he was admonished for causing "trouble" that year.

After his return to Mecklenburg he worked again on the plans for the Poel fortifications, which the Duke wanted to name Anseeburg . Construction began on New Year 1614 and was completed around 1618. In addition to the planning and execution of the building, Pilooth's tasks also included the layout of the palace gardens, furnishing the buildings and building two small warships. In 1620 the fortress was considered ready to be defended.

As early as April 3, 1619, the Duke had appointed Pilooth, who had lived on the island with his wife since 1617, as "Captain on our Vestung Pöle and over our ships, also for our general builder and engineer in our principality and land". From 1619, Pilooth devoted himself again to the new plans for Schwerin Castle. In 1621 he drafted a plan to make the Elde navigable above the influence in the Plauer See .

In October 1622 Pilooth traveled again to East Friesland to see Count Enno to erect a new building there in Aurich .

On April 24, 1627, Pilooth, together with the Duke of the Castle and City of Schwerin, assessed their defensive capabilities and drafted a plan for a new ski jump on the opposite side of the lake.

Pilooth was able to stay there even after the fortress of Poel was conquered by imperial troops and, on their behalf, rebuilt the bridge to the mainland that had been destroyed by the Danes in the winter of 1627/28. Shortly thereafter, he appears to have left the island as he is no longer mentioned in reports.
