Pincourt is a city in the southwest of the Canadian province of Quebec . It is located in the Montérégie administrative region , about 35 kilometers west of central Montreal . geography

The municipality of Pincourt is located in the western part of the Île Perrot . This island in the Hochelaga archipelago is surrounded by two estuary arms of the Ottawa . Neighboring municipalities on the island are Terrasse-Vaudreuil in the north, L'Île-Perrot in the northeast and Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot in the east. Across the western branch of the Ottawa River is the parish of Vaudreuil-Dorion .

history

Jean Talon , the first general manager of New France , transferred the island as seigneurie to the officer François-Marie Perrot , then governor of Montreal . Numerous voyageurs and seafarers who worked in the fur trade stopped on their travels on the west bank of the island, where there was a pine forest. The resting place by the "short pines" (French: pins courts ) was widely known, which is why the place name Pincourt gradually emerged. In 1856 the Grand Trunk Railway was opened between Montreal and Toronto , which triggered a surge in development. A year earlier, the parish of Sainte-Jeanne-Chantal-de-l'Isle-Perrot was founded, which included the entire island. In 1946 this became the entire municipality of Île-Perrot, which only existed for a few years. Pincourt split off as a new independent municipality in 1950 and received city status in 1959. The city has been a member of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal community association since 2000 .

population

According to the 2011 census, Pincourt had 14,305 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 1897 inh / km². 49.0% of the population stated French as their main language, while English accounted for 34.9%. 2.0% described themselves as bilingual (French and English), other languages and multiple answers accounted for 14.1%. Only French spoke 18.4%. In 2001, 75.6% of the population were Roman Catholic , 15.8% Protestant and 6.9% non-denominational.

traffic

The Taschereau Bridge.

Autoroute 20 , the highway between Montreal and Toronto, runs along the northern city limits . There is a fully developed junction next to the train station, while in the eastern section, which is classified as a main road, there is a level crossing with traffic lights . Autoroute 20 reaches the neighboring community of Vaudreuil-Dorion via the Pont Taschereau .

Two double-track railroad lines of the Canadian National Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway run parallel to the highway, each with a separate bridge over the Ottawa River. Pincourt shares a station with Terrasse-Vaudreuil on the suburban railway line of the Agence métropolitaine de transport , which runs from the Montrealer Lucien-L'Allier station to Vaudreuil-Dorion and Hudson . Several bus routes operated by the CIT La Presqu'Île company are responsible for fine-tuning the island .
