Piotr Gołębiowski (born June 10, 1902 in Jedlińsk near Radom , Poland , † November 2, 1980 in Nałęczów ) was Bishop and Apostolic Administrator of Sandomierz .

Life

The son of Jan and Helena Gołębiowski, who was baptized on June 22, 1902 in the parish church of Nałęczów, was given the name Piotr. He attended elementary school in his hometown and then the high school in Radom . After graduating from high school, he entered the Seminary in Sandomierz on July 29, 1919 . On 12 October 1924 he received in the Cathedral of Sandomierz by Auxiliary Bishop Paweł Kubicki the priesthood . From 1923 to 1928 he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . In 1929/30 he taught as a professor at the seminary in Sandomierz and became rector there. In 1941 he went to the parish pastoral and in 1950 he returned to the seminary as a professor, where he taught until 1962.

On June 3, 1957, Pope Pius XII appointed him . as auxiliary bishop in Sandomierz and at the same time titular bishop of Panium . The episcopal ordination donated to him on July 28, 1957 Jan Kanty Lorek , the bishop of Sandomierz; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishop in Sandomierz Franciszek Jop and the apostolic administrator of Warmia Tomasz Wilczyński . On February 28, 1968, Pope Paul VI appointed Piotr Gołębiowski as Apostolic Administrator of Sandomierz. The Polish authorities refused to allow him to leave the country to attend the session of the Second Vatican Council (1962 to 1965). He was only allowed to go to an ad limina visit in November 1973 at the invitation of Pope Paul VI. visit the "Eternal City" again after almost 50 years.

On June 10, 1977 he offered the age-related resignation from office, as is incumbent on every bishop with 75 years of age, the Pope Paul VI. but did not accept. The renewal of the resignation from office on February 25, 1980 was not accepted by Pope John Paul II .

He died while celebrating Holy Mass on All Souls Day. Cardinal Franciszek Macharski , Archbishop of Kraków , presided over the funeral celebrations on November 5, 1980 . He found his final resting place in the crypt of the Cathedral of Sandomierz.

On May 2, 1994, the beatification process was initiated by Bishop Edward Materski of Radom . The documentation was submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome on September 16, 1997 .
