Edward Henryk Materski (born January 6, 1923 in Vilnius , † March 24, 2012 in Radom ) was a Polish clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Radom .

Life

Edward Materski moved to Warsaw with his mother and two sisters after the death of his father in 1932. Materski studied at the Faculty of Theology in Warsaw from 1942 to 1947. He was a participant in the Warsaw Uprising . The Bishop of Kielce , Czeslaw Kaczmarek , ordained him on May 20, 1947 . He was a chaplain in Chmielnik, Kielce and Kurzelow. As the private secretary of Bishop Czeslaw Kaczmarek, he was also his contact person during the show trial against him and while he was in prison.

From 1966 to 1988 Materski was professor of catechesis at the seminary in Kielce and at the Catholic University of Lublin . He was President of the Commission of the Polish Bishops' Conference on Catholic Education.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on October 29, 1968 titular bishop of Aquae Sirenses and auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Kielce. The Archbishop of Gniezno and Warsaw , Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski , donated him the episcopal ordination on December 22, 1968 in Kielce Cathedral ; Co- consecrators were Jan Jaroszewicz , Bishop of Kielce, and Waclaw Skomorucha , Auxiliary Bishop in Siedlce .

On March 6, 1981, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Sandomierz . On March 25, 1992, he was appointed the first bishop of Radom. Pope John Paul II himself inaugurated the seminary initiated by Materski in Radom. On June 28, 1999, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

In 2007, President Lech Kaczyński awarded him the Order of Polonia Restituta (Commander with Star) as one of the heroes of the Warsaw Uprising, independence and social activist . Materski was an honorary citizen of the towns of Radom (1996), Skarżysko-Kamienna (1997) and Chmielnik (2001).
