Chmielnik is a city in Poland in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship .

history

The first written mention of today's Chmielnik comes from March 18, 1241 . On that day there was a battle between the Mongols and Polish knights, in which the Poles were defeated and Chmielnik was destroyed. King Sigismund II August. Gave the place at that time owned by the family Oleśnicki , on March 9, 1551 the town charter . During the years 1644 to 1666 Chmielnik was one of the most important places of the Reformation, especially Calvinism , in Poland. During the Third Partition of Poland , the city came under Austrian rule in 1795 . When the Duchy of Warsaw was founded in 1809 , Chmielnik became part of it and in 1815 part of the newly formed Congress Poland . In 1876 a fire raged in the city and destroyed large parts of Chmielnik. On September 4, 1939, the Wehrmacht marched into the city and occupied it without a fight. The invasion of the Red Army on January 13, 1945 marked the end of the Second World War for the city. In 1955 Chmielnik became the seat of a powiat , but lost it again in 1962. During a general administrative reform in Poland, the city came to the Kielce Voivodeship in 1975 , since its dissolution, Chmielnik has been part of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship from 1999.

Chmielnik is located on the national road 73 from Tarnów to Kielce, which runs in a north-south direction . The state road 78, which on the border with the Czech Republic , south of Rybnik , begins in the city. Furthermore, Chmielnik is the starting point of Voivodeship Road 765, which leads east and ends in Staszów , about 30 kilometers away .

The nearest international airport is the John Paul II Airport Kraków-Balice which is about 90 kilometers southwest of the city.
