history
Administrative history and coat of arms
The community has existed since 1973. It belonged to the Powiat Staszowski until 1975 , which was dissolved and until 1998 belonged to the significantly reduced Kielce Voivodeship . From 1870 to 1954 the place Raków belonged to Gmina Rembów , which was dissolved in favor of the Gromadas .
The coat of arms of the municipality and the main town shows a crayfish ( Polish rak ). The town of Raków was founded in 1569 by Jan Sienieński. The cancer comes from his wife's coat of arms, from which the name of the city and its coat of arms are derived.
History of the place and the region
After its establishment, Raków became a center of the socinian movement in Poland-Lithuania. From 1602 to 1638 there was a well-known college of the Polish Unitarians ( Polish Brothers ) in the city . The Rakau Catechism (also Raków Catechism) appeared in 1605 in Polish. In 1639 the Polish Sejm forbade any kind of social activity. In the years that followed, the city's residents were evicted and many buildings were destroyed and looted.
After the Third Partition of Poland , the region became Austrian in 1795 and later Russian. The population rose sharply in the 19th century, especially after the arrival of a Jewish community. The town charter was revoked in 1869/1870, also as a result of the Polish January uprising in 1863.
